1.sorry的基本意思是“感到伤心,觉得难过”,指因损失、创伤、不幸和烦恼等引发的或大或小的悲伤,往往夹有一种遗憾的感觉; 若用以表示批评,往往含有怜悯、讥讽或关心的意味。引申可表示“对不起的”,主要用于表示道歉和对自己所做的表示后悔。作此解时只能作表语。
2.sorry作“对不起的”解时,无比较级和最高级形式。
3.sorry后可跟that从句,动词不定式,也可跟for〔about〕短语(其后跟名词,动名词,代词或wh-从句), at短语(其后跟动名词)。
4.sorry后接不定式的一般式表示对正在做的或将来做的事表示难过或可惜,接动词不定式的完成式则表示对做过某事而感到难过或可惜。
5.sorry作“可怜的”“可悲的”解时,只用作定语。

这四个词都可表示“难过”。其区别是:sorry指因自己或他人的不幸引起的伤感,带有遗憾和惋惜的色彩; miserable指因身体、精神和外界因素引起的痛苦; unhappy指“不高兴”“心情不快”,有时也表示较为长久的不满意; sorrowful意为“悲哀的,悲伤的”,语气比sorry要强的多。例如:

在口语中,这3种表达方式都可表示“对不起,请原谅”。但用法上有区别:I'm sorry用在“某人说完话或做完事以后,需向人表示歉意”的场合; excuse me用在“某人说话或做事可能会引起对方不快或是要麻烦人家或是请示许可”的场合; I beg your pardon是一种比较正式的说法,在美式英语中可用pardon me来表示道歉。例如:
Excuse me, but may I leave the classroom for a moment?对不起,我可以离开教室一会儿吗?

［析］  表示抱歉的原因,须用but分句,而不可用for分句。

［析］  sorry表示的是人的感情,不可以it作主语。
