1.overlook的基本含义是“监督,管理”,即通过某人自身的影响来控制某人或某物; 现在通常指从高处向下看,即“俯视”; 也可指对某人或某物不够重视或注意,即“忽视”。引申还可指“原谅”,即对某一过失不多加追究。

1.overlook的本意是“检查,监督”,而其引申义则是“忽略”,二者的意思完全相反,所以可用neglect或disregard来代替overlook,表示“忽视”; 用oversee代替overlook,表示“检查”,以免二者混淆。
2.英式英语与美式英语中常用see来代替overlook。例如:

BrE:He was not aware that he was overlooked by the post-man.
AmE:He was not aware that he was seen by the post-man.
