1.other用作形容词作“别的,其他的,另外的”解时,常用来修饰复数名词或不可数名词; 如前面有this, that, some, any, each, every, no, none, one等词时,也可用来修饰单数名词。
2.other用在the或形容词性物主代词之后时,与单数名词连用表示“(两个中的)另一个”; 与复数名词连用表示某一集体中“其余的,剩下的(人或物)”。

这两个短语意思不同。some other day指“今后的某一天”; 而the other day指“不久前的某一天”。
the other, another
参见another条。

约翰比班上其他的男生都高。
［误］  John is taller than any boy in the class.
［正］  John is taller than any other boy in the class.
［析］  than any boy in the class指的是“班里的任何一个男孩,也包括约翰在内”,如果在any之后没有other,听起来好像约翰不是这个班的,所以必须加上other才指除约翰以外班上其余的任何一个男孩。

1.other用作代词时常用于复数形式,表示“其他的,别的或另外的人〔事物〕”; others若用于the或表示所属关系的限定词后,则表示“其余的人〔事物〕”,即把剩下的全部包括在内。
2.other也可用于单数形式,表示“(两者中的)另一个(人或事物)”,常与the连用。
