1.mathematics的意思是“数学”,是研究数字、数量和形状的科学,包括“算术、代数、几何”等学科。其前一般不用冠词。
2.mathematics单复数同形,但指作为一个科学分支“数学”或作为一个学科的“数学”时,句中谓语动词要用单数形式; 如果是用来指这门学科中的具体内容或数学实践能力时,如“数学能力”“数学成绩”“数学应用”“计算能力”“运算结果”等,则动词要用复数形式。

［析］  学科名词的第一英文字母一般不大写; 但用作教科书的名称时须大写。

在美国mathematics简写为math,如math作主语,谓语动词一定要用单数。例如:
