1.hope用作动词的基本意思是“希望”“期望”,指热切、专心致志地对未来的、积极的、崇高的、一些好的或有利的结果的盼望,含有一定的主观性,相信其可能实现。
2.hope既可用作及物动词,也可用作不及物动词。用作及物动词时,其后一般接动词不定式或宾语从句,但不能接名词、动名词作宾语,也不能接复合宾语; 用作不及物动词时,常与介词for连用表示“对…抱有希望”。
3.hope接动词不定式的完成体也是表达将来时间。
4.hope所接的that从句中的谓语多由will〔may〕+v.构成, that可省略。在对话中常可用so或not代替前面句子中肯定式或否定式的宾语(动词不定式或that从句)。
5.hope作“希望”解,本身即指将来,所以在hope的宾语从句中常可用一般现在时表示将来时间,一般不与be going to连用。
6.hope不是转移否定动词,表示否定意义时,否定词可放在主句中,也可放在从句中,但意义不同,用so或not代替时亦如此。注意can't but hope的意思是“只能希望”。
7.hope是静态动词,一般不用于进行体。如用于进行体,则强调当时的思想情况,或是表达一种强烈的愿望,除具有“短暂性”外,语气也较为婉转。其过去进行体was hoping出现在句中有时并不表示过去的时间,而可能指现在的时间,这种用法比其现在进行体语气更加委婉。
8.hope用于过去完成时可表示以前的希望或设想未曾实现,含有一种对希望幻灭的惋惜之情。
9.hope以动词不定式或that从句作主语时可用于被动结构,但必须采用形式主语结构。

这两个词均可表示对某事的实现持有信心,其含义的差别仅在于程度上:hope指持有一定的信心,而expect指持有高度的信心。在用法上, hope不可接名词、动名词作宾语,也不可接复合宾语; 而expect既可接名词、动名词作宾语,也可接复合宾语。
下面两个句子意思不同:

I shall hope to see you when we return to town.中的shall hope是个婉转用语,它实际上是指现在的hope, to see you才指将来的行为。但英语不能说I hope to shall see you...,因此才把shall转移到hope上。
