1.ancient的基本意思是“古代的”，即属于过去数千年前那一历史时期的、与生活在很久以前的人们及其文化和生活方式有关的。也指“古老的；很老的”，即很久以前就有、存在或发生的或从遥远的古代流传下来至今仍存在的。ancient还可指“(人)年老的”和“(物或事)老式的；古旧的”，这时通常具有戏谑的意味，修饰人时常含贬义。

ancient, old
这两个词都有“古代的”“古老的”意思。ancient指发生或存在于很久以前,现在则未必存在; old则指其存在至今的,时间已相当长。ancient所指的时间一般比old长。ancient的反义词是recent; old的反义词是young或new。

ancient还可用作名词,常与定冠词the连用,意思是“古人”。
